The Goal Audiobook Summary

In celebration of thirty years since the first publication of Eliyahu Goldratt’s essential business classic, HighBridge is proud to present an expanded audio edition of The Goal, featuring the original novel, plus case study reviews, and the author’s highly regarded essay “Standing on the Shoulders of Giants.” Also included is an audio archive exclusive featuring Eliyahu Goldratt in conversation about the significance-both personal and professional-of his breakthrough work.Alex Rogo is the manager of a failing manufacturing plant who receives an ultimatum from corporate headquarters: Turn the situation around in three months or the plant will be scrapped. With help from a mysterious mentor, Rogo discovers a revolutionary new way to do business-a way for people in any field of endeavor to increase productivity, profitability, and personal fulfillment. The story of Alex’s fight to save his plant contains a serious message for all managers in industry and explains the ideas which underline the Theory of Constraints (TOC) developed by Dr. Goldratt. First published in 1984, The Goal has changed how America does business.

Like other books by Goldratt and by Cox, The Goal is written as a piece of fiction. The main character is Alex Rogo, who manages a production plant owned by UniCo Manufacturing, where everything is always behind schedule and things are looking dire. At the beginning of the book, Bill Peach, a company executive, tells Alex that he has three months to turn operations at his plant around from being unprofitable and unreliable to being successful. His distant acquaintance, Jonah (a physicist), whom many believe represents Goldratt himself, helps him solve the company’s problems through a series of telephone calls and short meetings. A second story line is introduced involving Alex’s marital life. Perhaps surprisingly, Jonah’s concepts are also applied successfully in this alternative story line.

The Goal Audiobook Reviews

I really enjoyed this book…and I’m not even in the manufacturing industry! I’m working on my own food business right now. I think there’s a little something here for everyone who’s looking to increase efficiency in a counter intuitive way.

Also, I really enjoyed the way the story was told and I appreciate all of the extra effort that went in this audio production.

The Goal: A Process of Ongoing Improvement by Eliyahu M. Goldratt and Jeff Cox/Key Takeaways, Analysis & Review by Instaread is a summary of the book co-written by Goldratt and Cox outlining through a fictionalized story the ways an unprofitable manufacturing operation can be turned around.
The key takeaways of this book are: bottlenecks are the main reason manufacturing operations fail to make a profit, and the key to mitigating bottlenecks is to identify them, take immediate action to overcome them, and, most importantly, develop blueprints to enable forecasting future bottlenecks and put procedures in place to avoid them.
Using a fictional story based on historical information the authors walk readers through the process of turning an unprofitable company around within an externally imposed deadline to prevent it being sold. Although only a summary, this Instaread book can be useful in focusing an entrepreneur’s mind in the right direction, and makes me want to read the book itself.

In the book, Jonah teaches Alex Rogo by using the Socratic method. Throughout the book, whenever a meeting or telephone call dialogue happens with Jonah, he poses a question to Alex Rogo or a member of his crew, which in turn causes them to talk amongst themselves to come up with a solution to their problem. When Alex Rogo is with his wife, he finds the Socratic method to be a way to fix his marriage, which he then uses, with his crew, to come up with the five steps they should use to fix problems in the plant, which ultimately leads him and Lou to think up the three things every division manager, the position Rogo is promoted to, should be able to do.
