The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (A Hunger Games Novel) Summary

It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the tenth annual Hunger Games. In the Capitol, eighteen-year-old Coriolanus Snow is preparing for his one shot at glory as a mentor in the Games. The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, its fate hanging on the slender chance that Coriolanus will be able to outcharm, outwit, and outmaneuver his fellow students to mentor the winning tribute.

The odds are against him. He’s been given the humiliating assignment of mentoring the female tribute from District 12, the lowest of the low. Their fates are now completely intertwined – every choice Coriolanus makes could lead to favor or failure, triumph or ruin. Inside the arena, it will be a fight to the death. Outside the arena, Coriolanus starts to feel for his doomed tribute . . . and must weigh his need to follow the rules against his desire to survive no matter what it takes.

In the epilogue, Dean Highbottom reveals he had developed the idea of the Hunger Games simply as a cruel, but theoretical, event for a school project with Coriolanus’s father, Crassus, who would later present the idea to Dr. Gaul, making the Games a reality, causing animosity between Highbottom and Crassus. Coriolanus poisons Dean Highbottom, starting his trademark killings that will fuel his rise to power. Meanwhile, Coriolanus implements many of his ideas into future Hunger Games as a Gamemaker, and Lucy Gray is never seen again.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes Audiobook by Suzanne Collins Reviews

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes delivers a mesmerizing look into the life of Coriolanus Snow and the root causes of his villainous behavior. Collins once again proves that she is a master of building a fascinating world around complex characters who must grapple with the complications of chaos and control and their effects on human nature. — The Associated Press

It is a steep challenge to write a book whose hero is, everyone knows, destined to become deeply evil. Do we want to hear — now, after we know the endgame — that the young Voldemort was unfairly saddled with a demerit in class or that the adolescent Sauron fretted because he had to wear hand-me-down clothes? Yes, please. — New York Times

For true fans of The Hunger Games, Collins shines most as she weaves in tantalizing details that lend depth to the gruesome world she created in the original series and Coriolanus’s place in its history. — Time

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is your apocalyptic escape from our current apocalypse. — Vox

As Clary uncovers more about her family’s past, she finds an ally in mysterious Shadowhunter Sebastian. While Jace realizes exactly how much he’s willing to risk for Clary, can she harness her newfound powers to help save the Glass City—whatever the cost?.

City of Glass Audiobook Reviews

City of Glass sent me on an emotional rollercoaster. You know characters are well written when you viscerally feel the emotions that they are experiencing, you connect with them as if they are real people and cannot help but be completed enamoured with the story. Of course, to get this experience you need to follow the characters on their journey from the first book, City of Bones. This is not a book that you could read by itself and fully understand the immersive and expansive world that Cassie has built.

Even though I may usually not be consciously thinking about the fact that I’m going to review a book – I believe having been writing reviews much more frequently I am more cognizant of the aspects of a book. I am now subconsciously more aware of a book, especially with a re-read or an author I’m familiar with. I’m so used to having spent the last decade with the characters from the Mortal Instruments, that I feel I had forgotten who they were at the start. You don’t realize just how much they’ve grown until you re-read the books.

Each character learns so much over the course of the books that we get to know them and watch them evolve. The Clary I think of is artistic, strong, passionate, fiercely loyal and loving, brave and capable – so it is strange seeing her when she is new to the Shadow World. You can see the potential, although she has not grown and matured into that person yet. In City of Glass, I was amazed to be reminded just how whiny, child-like, quick to anger and throw temper tantrums, and reckless she could be.
I’ve mentioned it before, but I am continually impressed with and in awe of how much Cassandra Clare’s writing has improved over the years. Just the level of growth each principle character experiences over the course of the novels is fantastic. There were also so many emotional or action-filled scenes that the plot just raced by, but not in a bad it. I just fell completely into the story and didn’t want to put it down.

The fact that, even three books later, Cassie continues to expand the world she builds is incredible. I love when a fictional world, even one set within our own with hidden depth, is so real that you feel like you could live there. You understand the way of the world and its nuances. It was wonderful getting to see the Shadowhunters’ home country, Idris and the city of Alicante.

I can’t really discuss more without there being spoilers from the first two books or City of Glass, so all I have left to say is please read this series. If you give it a chance, even if it’s not perfect at first, I hope you will fall in love with it just like I did.

City of Bones Audiobook Summary

Discover the world of the Shadowhunters in the first installment of the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series and “prepare to be hooked” (Entertainment Weekly). City of Bones is a Shadowhunters novel.

When Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder—much less a murder committed by three people covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. And she’s more than a little startled when the body disappears into thin air. Soon Clary is introduced to the world of the Shadowhunters, a secret cadre of warriors dedicated to driving demons out of our world and back to their own. And Clary is introduced with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is almost killed by a grotesque monster. How could a mere human survive such an attack and kill a demon? The Shadowhunters would like to know.

City of Bones Audiobook Reviews

City of Bones is the book that started the phenomenon that is the Shadowhunters world and fandom. The book introduces us to a beloved cast of characters and the fascinating Shadow World that will be developed over the course of the future novels. We discover the world through the eyes of Clary Fray, a girl who always thought she was normal but discovers that she is actually part of a race of people who are part-angel and spend their days fighting back the demon hordes.

Clary and her best friend Simon are thrust into a world full of werewolves, vampires, warlocks, fairies and demons. They meet three Shadowhunters around their age: Jace, Izzy and Alec who live in the New York Institute. The first book has a number of different action scenes, but I think it shines most in the world-building department. Cassandra Clare develops an intricate world that you can easily imagine and yet is infinitely more complex than our own familiar one.

While there is some character development, the book only takes place over a period of two weeks. We are just getting to know the characters and that development or growth will come in later books. For now, we are learning about these characters and their secrets. Having read the series before, I am already in love with certain characters so it’s strange seeing their early personas. They grow so much over the course of the six books that there are some that I don’t particularly connect to, yet absolutely adore them later on.

Although I relate most to Clary, Jace is by far my favourite character in the series. He is witty, sarcastic and has the best lines in any scene. Some of the other characters have hilarious, memorable lines as well because Cassie writes fantastic dialogue – but Jace is the star. He can cause you to laugh out loud, which might garner you strange looks if you’re in public reading.

This book is fantastic, but you can definitely see the difference in writing quality between this book and Cassie’s most recent series. I think the writing is well done, the world building is immersive and the characters are relatable. I adore this book because it is what introduced me to the Shadow World and my beloved Shadowhunters, but I can admit that her writing has come so far in the last ten years. Regardless, I cannot recommend this series more to young adult/teen fans of fantasy, books with unique and immersive world building and if you’re willing to continue with it fantastic character building throughout the series.

City of Ashes Audiobook Summary

Is love worth betraying everything? Plunge into the second adventure in the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series and “prepare to be hooked” (Entertainment Weekly)—now with a gorgeous new cover, a map, a new foreword, and exclusive bonus content! City of Ashes is a Shadowhunters novel.

Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what’s normal when you’re a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who’s becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn’t ready to let her go—especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary’s only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil—and also her father.

To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings—and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?

In this breathtaking sequel to City of Bones, Cassandra Clare lures readers back into the dark grip of New York City’s Downworld, where love is never safe and power becomes the deadliest temptation.

City of Ashes Audiobook Reviews

Wow just wow what to say about this one. This is only the second time I’ve read this book, but it won’t be the last. I am slowly making it to the books I have yet to read, and I can tell you the suspense is killing me and scaring me to no end. I already know parts of what will happen but to read it myself is empowering in a way. I will once again be tossed into a story that I have loved.

This one picks up shortly after the end of book one. It is well paced and doesn’t do what a lot of authors do. It doesn’t rehash everything that you just read in book one. It gives you the information you need when you need it and that’s it. Clary and Jace are both finding out what they can do and who they really are. And everyone else is along for the ride.

I really love these books since it really gives you just hints about Magnus and Alec. Whom I love both dearly. I am not one for LGBT books, but I could read about Magnus and Alec till the world ends. I can’t wait to dive into the Bane Chronicles as well as Magnus’s own series which is coming out soon.

This one also gives us some of Jace’s relatives even if he doesn’t know it. I had to look it up since the name Herondale sounded familiar but, for the life of me, I couldn’t place it. Of course, it was in relation to Will from TID. Which made me feel awful since I love that series even more than this one.

This was an excellent book two with no issues what so ever!! And I am off to dive into book three City of Glass!

Charlotte’s Web Audiobook Summary

This Newbery Honor Book by E. B. White, author of Stuart Little and The Trumpet of the Swan, is a classic of children’s literature that is ‘just about perfect.’

Some Pig. Humble. Radiant. These are the words in Charlotte’s Web, high up in Zuckerman’s barn. Charlotte’s spiderweb tells of her feelings for a little pig named Wilbur, who simply wants a friend. They also express the love of a girl named Fern, who saved Wilbur’s life when he was born the runt of his litter.

E. B. White’s beloved book is a tender novel of friendship, love, life, and death that will continue to be enjoyed by generations to come.

“What the book is about is friendship on earth, affection and protection, adventure and miracle, life and death, trust and treachery, pleasure and pain, and the passing of time. As a piece of work it is just about perfect, and just about magical in the way it is done.”—Eudora Welty, The New York Times Book Review

“High caprice on a farm, handled with wit and wisdom, that serves to put an imperfect world back into joint.”—The New Yorker

“A fantasy that has the beauty and delicacy of the web itself.”—The Saturday Review.

Charlotte’s Web Audiobook Reviews

I had forgotten how sad the ending was but how uplifting. Charlotte is a spider who befriends Wilbur the pig. Fern loves Wilbur whom she and Charlotte protect from being sent to the slaughterhouse. Templeton the rat helps and is the comic relief.

I loved this book but I needed a box of Kleenex. It is so well written. The author pulled me into his world. I was so caught up in the story. The characters are wonderful. The humor is subtle but there. I could picture Templeton at the carnival. It is a great book.

Court of Thorns and Roses Audiobook Summary

A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES is a completely original retelling of Beauty and the Beast by New York Times bestselling author Sarah J. Maas with, of course, a strong female lead, faeries, and an amazingly inventive world.

Court of Thorns and Roses Audiobook Reviews

For the past few years, I have been pining for a series that would come close to captivating me as much as my favorite series of all had previously done… Harry Potter. No, I would never compare between the two, I simply correlate the depth to which both series had such a dramatic effect on me and the extent to which I fully dove into each book.

People… I’m a mom, I have a life, and NO time to read. I read this series in under 5 days.

I honestly thought, just from reading reviews and plot lines that this was just another supernatural series, destined to not live up to it’s great predecessors of supernatural series greatness. I even waited to read this after I bought it. I was SO wrong with my initial thinking.
I fell into this series.. into the words. The characters. The plot. Everything about this book had me so enveloped into the story and world. I just completed the third book, and I am re-reading this first one again because I do not want to escape the magic of the world Sarah J. Maas has thrown me head-first into. I could not stop reading until I finished the last book and I still beg for more, as any good series would leave you wanting.

Read this book if you… Want to find yourself 6 hours later, finished with a book and buying the second one immediately following finishing the first; need a good romance novel; want to lose yourself in an amazing series; love books that leave you weak in the knees, crying uncontrollably, breathless, or so excited you’re hurling your fist in the air without realizing (yes, my husband was REALLY confused)..; enjoyed Harry Potter, or Twilight, or Pride and Prejudice, Romeo and Juliet, Hunger Games, The Alchemist, The Magicians, The Goldfinch… or etc.etc.etc… ; want to read something that you will remember forever…. THIS is the book, and series, you should read.

Lightning Thief Audiobook Summary

Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school . . . again. No matter how hard he tries, he can’t seem to stay out of trouble. But can he really be expected to stand by and watch while a bully picks on his scrawny best friend? Or not defend himself against his pre-algebra teacher when she turns into a monster and tries to kill him? Of course, no one believes Percy about the monster incident; he’s not even sure he believes himself.

Until the Minotaur chases him to summer camp.

Suddenly, mythical creatures seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy’s Greek mythology textbook and into his life. The gods of Mount Olympus, he’s coming to realize, are very much alive in the twenty-first century. And worse, he’s angered a few of them: Zeus’s master lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect.

Now Percy has just ten days to find and return Zeus’s stolen property, and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus. On a daring road trip from their summer camp in New York to the gates of the Underworld in Los Angeles, Percy and his friends–one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena–will face a host of enemies determined to stop them. To succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the true thief: he must come to terms with the father who abandoned him; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of failure and betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves.

Lightning Thief Audiobook Reviews

A flash of lighting shatters the night sky, almost angry. Maybe Zeus is still mad. If you didn’t know about that, then you should really check out the Percy Jackson books. When you read about Percy Jackson’s adventures, like all other awesome books, you feel like you are the main character. You feel like you’ve beheaded a hydra, blown up the Gateway arch, and held a lightning bolt in your hand.

The story starts with Percy warning us about reading it. Like something about if you find something familiar, then close the book immediately. Um, I read it on a Kindle, how can you close a Kindle?

Then it goes on about his life. When his mom takes him on a vacation to the beach away from his abusive stepfather, she tries to get him to a camp to stop a minotaur from killing him. Yeah, a minotaur. On the way there, he finds his best friend has goat legs. Like a lot of other stories, Percy loses consciousness.

When he wakes up, he finds himself in a camp full of half-gods, satyrs, a centaur, and a god of wine that always says peoples’ names wrong. Then he finds that the minotaur has sent his mother to the underworld and he has killed the minotaur. When he finds out he is the son of the sea god, Zeus gives him a death threat because he thinks that Percy took his most powerful lightning bolt.

Then Percy has to go on a quest along America, fighting monsters, metal spiders, and medusa. And then into the underworld. When he does, he finds a terrible mistake…and a traitor. But enough about that! I don’t want to give you too many spoilers.

I actually watched the (TERRIBLE!) movie about Percy Jackson before I read the book. After I read the book and watched the movie again, I decided that I would never watch the movie again. (Seriously, make a note: Never watch the Percy Jackson movie). The book is infinite times better, and in my opinion they ruined everything when they made the movie.

Yes, I own all of the Percy Jackson books, and all of the Heroes of Olympus, the next series. Rumor has it that there is another series about norse gods and heroes. As Dionysus would say, “You’ve heard of Peter Johnson. Now, get ready for Magno Cheese.” (Magnus Chase)

Eragon Audiobook Reviews

A very engaging read. Don’t be deterred by criticism. I did not read this series for a long time after hearing much criticism of the young author and now regret that I did not read it sooner.

There is a review on here stating that the book is only decent for a 17 year old to have written but not an adult, and that is nonsense. You would not know it was written by a 17 year old unless you were told and it is criticized unfairly because of his age. He does not “borrow” fantasy elements from more widely known authors any more than those widely known authors borrowed from ancient fairy tails. Tolkien and Le Guinn were not any more creative, many fantasy elements in their stories go back to before their stories as well. But this author is judged much more harshly and unjustly because he is young by people who are unable to form their own opinions and blindly judge the worth of a book by its acclaim. And the fact that this book is not a cult classic such as Tolkein’s should not affect its merit.

It is a very good book and is only insulted by those jealous of the young author’s success.

NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE STARRING JULIA ROBERTS, OWEN WILSON, AND JACOB TREMBLAY!
Over 6 million people have read the #1 New York Times bestseller WONDER and have fallen in love with Auggie Pullman, an ordinary boy with an extraordinary face.
The book that inspired the Choose Kind movement.
I won’t describe what I look like. Whatever you’re thinking, it’s probably worse.
August Pullman was born with a facial difference that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a mainstream school. Starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep, he wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid—but his new classmates can’t get past Auggie’s extraordinary face. WONDER, now a #1 New York Times bestseller and included on the Texas Bluebonnet Award master list, begins from Auggie’s point of view, but soon switches to include his classmates, his sister, her boyfriend, and others. These perspectives converge in a portrait of one community’s struggle with empathy, compassion, and acceptance.
‘Wonder is the best kids’ book of the year,’ said Emily Bazelon, senior editor at Slate.com and author of Sticks and Stones: Defeating the Culture of Bullying and Rediscovering the Power of Character and Empathy. In a world where bullying among young people is an epidemic, this is a refreshing new narrative full of heart and hope. R.J. Palacio has called her debut novel “a meditation on kindness” —indeed, every reader will come away with a greater appreciation for the simple courage of friendship. Auggie is a hero to root for, a diamond in the rough who proves that you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out.
